What is Heen Bovitiya?
Heen Bovitiya (Osbeckia octandra) is a small flowering shrub native to Sri Lanka. Sinhala speakers know it as හීන් බෝවිටියා, and it is one of the plants most closely associated with the island's traditional Hela botanical tradition.
You will recognise it by its bright magenta flowers and its narrow, three-veined leaves. It grows wild along hedgerows and village paths through Sri Lanka's wet zone, and Sri Lankan households have gathered and dried its leaves for generations to make a simple herbal drink.
